Napoli Squander Another Big Chance With Cagliari Draw
Napoli rescued a draw from the match against Cagliari through a Victor Osimhen. It was overall, however, another missed opportunity that will count in the challenge for the Serie A title.
Failure to win Serie A could turn out to be Napoli’s own fault at the end of the season. Luciano Spalletti missed out on another great opportunity this Monday. The Partenopei face relegation challenged Cagliari.
Furthermore, it had been an unexpected week in Serie A all around. Title challengers Inter and AC Milan had also, surprisingly, failed to win. AC Milan drew to lowly Salernitana. Meanwhile, Inter lost to an inspired Sassuolo side.
It looked like clear sailing as Spalletti assembled his best available side in an uncharacteristic 3-4-2-1 formation. The tactic allowed Napoli to gain width down the flanks. However, Diego Demme and Piotr Zielinski struggled to retain the ball in the central area.
Cagliari opened the scoring in the 58th minute through Gaston Pereiro. It’s the forward’s only fourth goal of the season. More still, the goal arrived as Napoli created fewer goal chances throughout the game.
With Gli Azzurri creating little in the final stages, Mario Rui’s cross was converted by striker Victor Osimhen who saved the team’s blushes.
It ended all square. However, Napoli will feel lucky to have earned anything from this match. Fatigue certainly played its. Against FC Barcelona, later this week, such issues need to be eliminated if Napoli hopes to advance in the Europa League. The same can be said about the team’s chances in Serie A.
