Napoli Seals Decisive Victory Against Leicester in Europa League
Napoli managed a vital 3-2 victory over England’s Leicester City, in spite of a slew of injuries. The three points see Napoli qualify out of their Europa League group.
Both Napoli and Leicester had everything to play for ahead of their Europa League clash. It was their final game of Group C. Napoli needed a victory to qualify. Leicester City only required a draw.
Napoli and Leicester started the match without a number of their key players. The Paternopei have been facing an injury crisis of late. Seven of the Foxes‘ players have tested positive for Covid.
Gli Azzuri got off to a flying start. In the 4th minute, winger Adam Ounas opened the scoring from a well-placed shot that arrived after Andrea Petagna’s excellent pass.
Petagna was available once more in the 24th minute. Here he provided the assist for the talented Elif Elmas. It was 2-0 and Napoli was going through.
The lead, however, was squandered. In the 27th minute, Jonny Evans took advantage of a defensive debacle to score. Then, in the 33rd minute, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s volley leveled the scoring.
Napoli managed the winner in the second half. Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s excellently timed underlap allowed him to cross to Elmas who scored the decisive goal.
The result allows Napoli to qualify after finishing second place in the group. Meanwhile, Spartak Moscow claimed first place in the group, while Leicester will be disappointed to be knocked out of the competition.
