Napoli Records Third-Best Debut to a Season in Serie a History
Napoli’s 1-0 victory over Salernitana has kept them top of the Serie A table. It’s a remarkable start to the season. It’s the third-best beginning of a new campaign, after 10 games in the history of the competition. The record is held by Napoli’s 2017/18 team.
Best start of the season since 2017
Napoli’s season has started in superb fashion. The Partenopei side has managed to earn 31 points after 10 matches. Luciano Spalletti’s side has won all its games, except for the derby against AS Roma in which the team drew 0-0.
The results put Napoli in pole position for winning the Scudetto. It’s a long cry from last season’s performances, and from the exceptions for the current campaign. Spalletti, a veteran of Serie A management was viewed with some hesitation by different members of the team’s fanbase.
The team’s form is further expressed by the stats. Napoli’s goalkeepers, David Ospina and Alex Meret have managed to keep a clean sheet in 8 of the 11 matches this season. In fact, the team hasn’t conceded a goal in 5 matches. Napoli has also registered the best goal difference in Serie A, +20.
Napoli’s 2017/18 team are the record holders
The only team to have started a Serie A season better is Napoli’s 2017/18 generation. They too had managed 31 points in 11 matches. However, they managed an even greater goal difference, +24. The team scored a whopping 32 goals during the campaign on the strength of great performances by the likes of Dries Mertens, Jorginho, or Lorenzo Insigne. The start of that season included sensational victories, such as the 6-0 thrashing over Benevento, and a convincing 4-1 against Lazio.
Napoli finished the season in 2nd place, narrowly missing out on the Scudetto in spite of managing 91 points. The team’s manager Maurizio Sarri earned himself a transfer to Premier League’s Chelsea the following season, managing to convince Jorginho to join him in London.
Team morale in the Napoli dressing room is great at the moment and fans are, naturally, anxious for the team to continue its rise to the top.
