Napoli Looking to Win Their Third Supercoppa Italiana
Should Napoli manage to win against Serie A champions Juventus tonight, they will win their third Supercoppa Italiana trophy. The previous two distinctions were won in 1990 and 2014 respectively.
The Partenopei are a team with an illustrious history. Of all the silverware that the Naples side has won over the years, the Supercoppa Italiana holds a special place. After all, the match is an opportunity for the team to play against another of Italy’s finest sides.
Napoli’s first taste of victory in this match between the Serie A and Coppa Italia champions came in 1990. Manager Albertino Bigon not only managed to win the trophy but also did so in spectacular fashion, crushing rivals Juventus by a 5-1 scoreline.
At the time, Napoli were champions of Italy. Their squad included legendary names such as Diego Maradona, Ciro Ferrara, Marco Baroni, or Andrea Silenzi. Their rivals were no less famous, with the likes of Roberto Baggio and Salvatore Schillachi wearing the Bianconeri jersey at the time.
Napoli’s second victory in the Italian Supercup, came more recently, in 2014. The match was, rather famously, played in Doha, Qatar, in a bid to highten the popularity of Italian football across the world.
Gli Azzurri’s opponents on the day were, once again Juventus, who had won the previous two editions of the Supercoppa. At the time, Napoli were winners of the Italian Cup and assembled a great squad. This included names like Gonzalo Higuain, who scored a brace in this game, David Lopez, or Raul Albiol.
After the two team found themselves level, 2-2 after extra time, the game was decided by a penalty shootout. A great display from Brazilian goalkeeper Rafael, earned Napoli the trophy.
Napoli once again meets Juventus tonight, with fans of Gli Azzuri anxious for their team to add more silverware to their trophy cabinet.
