Napoli Celebrates as Rest of the Pack Continues to Fight for UCL Spot
Naples hosted an exciting coronation ceremony filled with films, fireworks, and music following their victory at Udine in Serie A playback season. The Partenopei celebrated with joyous fanfare at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona after returning home.
Tens of thousands of fans came out despite the sold-out game against Fiorentina to join in the celebrations outside the stadium gates, enjoying the post-match light show that illuminated an ocean of blue before giving way to colors from Napoli’s tricolor badge as they celebrate next season as champions.
Even without an awards presentation, players were individually honored, while Oscar-winning director Paolo Sorrentino made an unexpected guest appearance to embrace Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis and acknowledge Maradona’s impactful contribution.
Victor Osimhen, Napoli’s top scorer this season, scored the only penalty that led to their 1-0 victory and set an all-time Serie A goalscoring record with his performance, surpassing George Weah by one. Fiorentina attempted to upset Napoli’s celebration but was unsuccessful.
While Serie A title race may have ended, competition for European spots remains intensely fierce. Fiorentina finished eighth during this weekend and their chances for qualification to continental competitions lie with winning either Coppa Italia or Europa Conference League where they already reached either finals or semis respectively.
