Kalidou Koulibaly has apologized to his Napoli teammates after incurring a red card in the match against Benevento. The highly-praised defender has blamed his poor choice of tackle on fatigue.
Koulibaly is considered by many to be one of the best defenders in Serie A. This is one of the reasons why Napoli’s players and supporters were shocked when the Senegalese center-back earned himself a dismissal in the match against Benevento which Gli Azzurri won 2-0.
According to Il Mattino, soon after the match ended, Koulibaly shared his apology with the rest of the squad in the dressing room. The defender blamed his decision n being tired and forced to make a tackle he would otherwise have avoided.
Kalidou Koulibaly was absent for several of the team’s previous games due to Covid-19 related illness. Il Mattino also reports that the recovery has not been without its challenges and that the towering defender is not yet fully fit. Napoli’s team of coaches has drawn up an extensive training schedule for the defender with the view to get him ready for the upcoming fixtures.
Koulibaly’s double-shift training will, hopefully, get the defender back to optimal form when his team meets Bologna on Sunday. However, due to the red card he incurred in the last Serie A match, Koulibaly will not be available for the mid-week game against Sassuolo.
