Dries Mertens Is On Arsenal’s Transfer Radar

Belgium forward Dries Mertens is, according to sources, one of Mikel Arteta’s transfer priorities for the new season. Napoli may also be persuaded to sell as a means to reduce their wage bill.

There is no denying that Dries Mertens has been one of Napoli’s best players since joining the club. The Belgium player, who is often played in a trequartista role, has scored 101 goals in 257 appearances for Gli Azzuri.

Mertens has also been very loyal to the club. According to rumors, over the years he has declined several profitable offers from major clubs. This summer, the club’s loyalty towards the player gets a turn at being tested.

Napoli may be looking to reduce their considerable wage bill this summer, reports Daily Cannon. Mertens, now 33-years-old, could be among the players facing the chopping block.

The Belgium footballer will not be without offers though. It has been reported that Tottenham and, especially, Arsenal would be interested in signing the player. Mertens’ style may be particularly attractive to Mikel Arteta.

The Arsenal manager is expected to look and make a number of squad changes to the Gunners this summer, and an experienced attacking player of Mertens’ quality could help boost Arsenal’s chances for next season.

Mertens has faced a number of injury concerns this season. In spite of this, he has made 17 starts for Napoli in Serie A, scoring 8 goals and providing 7 assists for his team.
