Diego Maradona Jr. Threatens Napoli With Legal Action Over Shirt Design
SSC Napoli has paid tribute to Diego Maradona, arguably the club’s greatest ever player, with a special shirt design depicting El Pibe D’Oro. Maradona’s son has, however, has threatened legal action after the jersey was worn in last night’s match against Verona.
The special shirt is meant as a tribute to the player that guided Napoli towards its only two Serie A titles, in 1987 and 1990. The jersey is titled Maradona Game. It’s been worn in the 1-1 draw against Verona and will be worn in two other Serie A games, against Inter and Lazio.
Diego Armando Maradona Sinagra, the Argentine footballer’s son, has commented about the initiative on social media, but not in the way that some fans may have expected. Maradona Jr. is not happy about the shirt design. He claims that neither he nor other members of his family were informed or consulted about the jersey.
Furthermore, Maradona Jr. believes that the use of his father’s image is an infringement on image rights. As a consequence, he has threatened legal action against the club and against Stefano Ceci, Diego Maradona’s former manager.
At the time of writing, Napoli’s officials have made no statement, and they plan to continue using the design for the following two Serie A matches.
